BATTLE OF THE SPOOKY CLASSICS

Written by: Ciaren Rounds

Edited by Gabi De Vega and Phoebe Hong

Throughout the week of October 18th, The WolfPak Press put together a March Madness inspired bracket - but instead of basketball teams, we had the JHS student body vote on their favorite Halloween movie! The first round consisted of:

Hocus Pocus vs. Friday the 13th: Part 3

The Addams Family vs. The It Series

Girl Vs. Monster vs. The Nightmare Before Christmas

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown vs. The Craft

Coraline vs. Monster House

Scream vs. Halloweentown

Halloween: The Night He Came Home vs. Nightmare On Elm Street

The Conjuring vs. Corpse Bride

Many of the matches were EXTREMELY close; but in the end, it came down to The Nightmare Before Christmas VS. Coraline. With a full 24 hours of voting, the results were finally in. The Nightmare Before Christmas was Jackson’s Favorite Halloween Movie Bracket Winner. And though this movie was pronounced the preeminent JHS Halloween movie, there were definitely some differences of opinion. Some Jackson students were in full support of The Nightmare Before Christmas winning, while others felt the exact opposite. Hunter Meyer, Brooklyn Conant, Rylie Straight and Phoebe Hong, all seniors at Jackson, were interviewed by the WolfPak Press staff and were asked a series of questions on their opinions of the result.

Hunter Meyer: Pro The Nightmare Before Christmas

When asked his opinion on the winner of the Halloween Movie Bracket, Hunter was adamant that the movie was the best option for the win. Over and over again during his interview he tells that he was ecstatic that The Nightmare Before Christmas won, saying that “I’m glad it won, there was no other movie in the bracket that deserved the title.”

With Hunter being a true stan of this Halloween movie, Rylie had some difference of opinion at first…

Rylie Straight: Neutral The Nightmare Before Christmas

Asking the question of how she felt about the movie winning, she explained that “At first I was sad about Coraline losing, but as I thought about it more, Coraline is pretty scary, so The Nightmare Before Christmas winning was probably the better option!” Where her opinion stands though, falls more along with a different movie. Rylie said that “hands down Girl Vs. Monster should have won.” and after she started singing a song from the movie to show her utmost spirit in that direction.

With the great show of Rylie singing coming to an end, Brooklyn, another Pro The Nightmare Before Christmas, had some more words for the movie winner.

Brooklyn: Pro The Nightmare Before Christmas

Brooklyn goes into great detail about the question, ‘How do you feel about The Nightmare Before Christmas winning?”. She explains that the movie definitely deserved to win over Coraline, considering that “Coraline scared me as a kid. The movie is scary, the characters are creepy, and I also don’t like that it isn’t quite Halloween based, its more of just a scary movie.” With a great description of how she felt, the Wolfpak Press definitely got a good idea of how our student body felt about the winner of the bracket.

With so many good comments on The Nightmare Before Christmas winning, there was someone who definitely disagreed with the outcome.

Phoebe Hong: Anti The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas is not nearly as spooky or interesting as Coraline.” She tells Wolfpak Press staff. “Coraline is for, like, all ages from children to even adults because there's so many underlying messages and Easter eggs!” The Wolfpak Press found this interesting considering other student opinions, so they pressed further, asking why she felt that way. She concludes by explaining that “I’ve always been a fan of horror movies and Coraline is the perfect level of scary. It is weird, original and scary, which is key for a good Halloween movie".

This Celebrity Bracket was quite the hit and received a large amount of student participation. Many different thoughts were shared with the JHS student body regarding what movie students think should have won, or other movies that should have been included.
